I beat a World Champion!!
Do you read me wrong? No, I had beaten a world champion. Indeed, during Merdeka Open 2007. He is none others than the former world police champion, Ismail Ahmad.
Not a very interesting game though but here is the game. The annotation was done with the help of Fritz. Have fun.
Ismail Ahmad (2149) - Tan Eu Hong (2043)
Merdeka Standard 2007, Round 6, 01.09.2007
1.b3!? Interesting. I was expecting 1.d4 d5 2.Nf3 Nf6 3.Bg5 1…d5 2.Bb2 Nd7 3.Nf3 Ngf6 4.g3 c5 5.e3 Qc7 6.d4 b6 7.Nbd2 e6 8.Bg2 Ba6 9.c4 Rd8 10.Rc1 Qb8 11.0–0 Be7 12.Re1 0–0 13.Qc2 cxd4 14.Nxd4 Rc8 15.Qb1 Bb7 16.a3?! This hands over the initiative to Black. 16…Rfd8?! [16…dxc4 17.Bxb7 Qxb7 18.Nxc4 Qd5³ Black has some chances of exploiting White’s light square weaknesses.] 17.N2f3? This creates himself an isolated pawn at c4-square and helps Black to pin White’s minor pieces along the long diagonal. 17…dxc4! 18.bxc4 Qa8?! [18…Be4 19.Qa2 Nc5–+ and Black is winning.] 19.Nh4?? Loses a pawn and later the game. [19.Red1 Be4 20.Ne1 Bxg2 21.Nxg2 Ne5 22.Qa2 Bc5µ and White can still try to defend.] 19…Bxg2 20.Nxg2
How to win a pawn?
20…Ne5! 21.Red1 Nxc4 22.Qa2 Nxb2 23.Qxb2 Rxc1 24.Rxc1 Rc8 25.Ne1 h6 26.Nd3 Nd5 27.e4 Nf6 28.f3 Nd7 29.Nb5 Nc5 30.Nf2 Qb7 31.Kg2 a6 32.Nc3?! [32.Nd4 is better. 32…Bf6 33.Ng4µ and White is not too bad.] 32…Bf6 33.Qa2 Bd4!–+
Black’s minor pieces control the center while White’s placed passively. 34.Rc2 Rd8?! [34…Qc7 35.Qc4 Bxf2 36.Rxf2 Qd8–+ threatening 37…Nd3!] 35.Ncd1 Bxf2 36.Nxf2 Qd7 37.Qc4 Qa4 38.Qc3 Qd4 39.Qb4 Qxb4 40.axb4 Na4
I was trying to play save by exchanging some pieces but thinks this actually make the win more difficult as sometimes a pawn up in endgame is not necessary winning. 41.Rc7 Rd4 42.Ra7 Rxb4 43.Rxa6 Nc5 44.Ra8+ Kh7 45.Ng4 Rb2+ 46.Kh3?! [46.Kf1 is better as after 46.Kh3, White traps his own king and face the danger of being mated.] 46…b5 47.Rf8 f6 48.Rf7 Kg6 49.Rc7 Nd3 50.Rc3 Ne1 51.f4 b4 52.Rc7 Nf3 53.f5+ exf5 54.exf5+ Kxf5 55.Rxg7 h5 56.Ne3+ Ke6 57.g4 h4 58.g5
Find the correct move.
58…Nxg5+? [58…Rxh2+ 59.Kg4 Ne5+ 60.Kh5 Re2 61.Nf1 h3–+] 59.Kxh4 Rxh2+ 60.Kg3 Rh3+ 61.Kf2 Ne4+ 62.Ke2 Nc3+ 63.Kd2 Nd5 [63…Rxe3 64.Kxe3 b3 65.Rb7 b2–+] 64.Nc4 b3 65.Rb7 f5 66.Ra7 f4 67.Ra6+ Kf5 Black went on to win the game after some last minute blitz. 0–1
