Year 1 Review

More than 1 year has passed since I last created a chess study plan based on the insipiration from an article from Convekta.com written by WGM Irina Mikhailova where according to her “The success formula has been corroborated: 2200 ELO + 2 year training period with Convekta Ltd programs = IM.”

I had not posted too much about the study plan since my Tactical Training post and this time after 1 year, is review time.

First of all, some criteria in my plan: books study, tactics training, endgame study and opening preparation. Weirdly, however, I did not include and practice, tournament play and solving chess positions as a part of the training. A total of approximately 20 hours per week (52 * 20 = 1040 hours per year) was intended for these study and books study was given the highest priority.

Start Date: Last week of July 2006
Complete Date: Last Week of July 2007

Summary of How I spent my time:
Month 01 (5 weeks): A:125.5h; P:100h.
Month 02 (4 weeks): A:17.5h; P:80h.
Month 03 (4 weeks): A:48h; P:80h.
Month 04 (4 weeks): A:79h; P:80h.
Month 05 (4 weeks): A:56h; P:80h.
Month 06 (5 weeks): A:51.5h; P:100h.
Month 07 (4 weeks): A:22h; P:80h.
Month 08 (5 weeks): A:43h; P:100h.
Month 09 (4 weeks): A:29h; P:80h.
Month 10 (5 weeks): A:111h; P:100h.
Month 11 (4 weeks): A:26.5h; P:80h.
Month 12 (4 weeks): A:80h; P:80h.
Total (52 weeks): A:669h; P:1040h.
Execution rate: 64.33%
A:Actual Carried Out
P:Planned

Milestone:
1) Expanded my opening with White from 1.e4 to 1.d4 or 1.e4. (both are lousy :P)
2) Gained roughly 200 points of National Rating but my initial national rating was way too low at 15++.
3) Gained 39 points of FIDE rating (not published yet, if not mistaken this will be published on the Oct 07 FIDE list).
4) Better performance at FIDE rated events comparing my play at Malaysia Chess Challenge 2006 and National Closed 2007. This is however not too accurate since it is only based on the tournaments and the average strength of the players is different.
5) Finished within prize giving range in all tournaments (Aug06-Jul07) except Malaysia Chess Challenge 2006 and USM Nibong Tebal 2006.

Items to be included in the planning for year 2 asides from items of year 1:
1) Practice play: online chess, blitz chess and playing against computer.
2) Tournament play: all possible weekend tournaments and 2~3 FIDE rated events.
3) Exercises on solving chess positions or puzzles.

Conclusion: This plan did work and everyone is welcomed to give it a try.
