Chess Training - Tactical Training
Tactics training is always a very important point in terms of chess training, and nowadays we have multiple methods to train our tactical ability.
Chess Tactics Server being one of the free and challenging method on that purpose.
I started my “chess training program” back on July 2006 and since then the program has been carried out “correctly” though with a few lags here and there due to other commitments.
The plan of the 2 years program is achieve certain level of play in 2 years’ time. The program was developed according to an article from Convekta.com written by WGM Irina Mikhailova where according to her “The success formula has been corroborated: 2200 ELO + 2 year training period with Convekta Ltd programs = IM.”
My objective is of different as I am no 2200 rated player. My goal is to reach 2200 in 2 years, considering my age and work commitment, it is almost impossible. Well, who knows, we never know without trying and since I lose nothing trying, a plan was created accordingly. The plan consist of following:
- Tactical Training
- Positional Training
- Opening Preparation
- Endgame Study
- Tournament Play & Practice
- Total Practice if possible = 20 hours per week.
The initial plan for tactical training was to make use of resource from books but that is time consuming and the plan did not carried out.
Finally, via some online posting, I found out about Chess Tactics Server and started to practice by solving puzzles online. The site is user friendly and one can start solving chess positions after registering one self a login (solving using Guest account is also possible).
I can keep track of my progress on the server by viewing my profile as figure below.
The interesting part of the Chess Tactics Server being the rating system they use to track our performance in terms of speeds and accuracy. I had read posts on forums and blogs discussing on whether to favor speed or high accuracy but if we only favor on one of the method then our tactic rating goes down. Well, different people different point of views and I favor excelling at both area.
My training plan for this including working on tactics around 5 hours on Chess Tactics Server per week. My Chess Tactics Server profile shows that I had actually made 11833 tries with 80.1% accuracy and 1606 Tactics Rating which almost equivalent to 118 hours spent on tactics already (1 hour == 100 tries)…
That’s all for tactical part of my chess training and I hope this can prove useful for anyone on their quest to chess improvement too. Feedback are welcomed.
Up next: chess books study, opening preparation and review of the program for year 1.
 Cheers!
Eu Hong
